Virat Kohli can emulate Sourav Ganguly as a captain, says Virender Sehwag

Sehwag has praised Virat Kohli

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag  has said that the current Indian Test team can go places under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. Sehwag said that the quality in the pace department gives this team an extra edge and just like Sourav Ganguly, Kohli's boys can win matches outside the subcontinent.

The Indian team is currently the number 1 ranked Test team in the world and is in the midst of an extended purple patch as the team has remained invincible at home and has beaten Sri Lanka and West Indies in their own backyard.

"I believe this team under Virat has the quality and capability of winning Test matches outside the sub-continent. They can definitely emulate the performances of the team that played under Sourav Ganguly and won Test matches in England and Australia," Sehwag was quoted as saying by PTI.

The flamboyant opener was very optimistic about India's pace bowling battery as he believed that the pedigree of the bowlers can be gauged from the fact that someone as experienced as an Ishant Sharma cannot find a place in the starting eleven.

"You need a good bowling attack to take wickets. We have a brilliant bowler like Mohammed Shami. We have Umesh Yadav and someone like Ishant Sharma, who can also win India matches. There is no reason why they can't replicate their performances at home in overseas conditions," Sehwag further added.

The Delhi dasher also spoke highly of young batting sensation Rishabh Pant, who is smashing all records in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. Pant has scored 903 runs so far at an average of 90.3 which includes 1 triple century, 1 double ton and 2 centuries. His approach to the game has already evoked comparisons with Sehwag.

"Rishabh's future is very bright. He will certainly play for India. In my career, I have not seen cases where people have performed consistently and yet did not get a chance at the highest level. Rishabh has to maintain this consistency and before one plays for India, there is India A. He will certainly get his chance to play for India A. He has to utilise that and I believe no one can then stop him from playing for India," Sehwag who himself scored 2 triple centuries in Test matches said.
