Virat Kohli ODI dismissal modes overview: how many bowled, LBWs and stumpings?

Virat Kohli is one of the many legendary cricketers to grace the field for India in the limited-overs format. As far as his ODI career is concerned, Kohli has amassed 13,906 runs in 283 innings at an astonishing average of 58.18 with 50 centuries.

During the 2023 World Cup, he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's record (49) of most centuries in the 50-over format. In the same tournament, the 35-year-old slammed 765 runs, the most runs ever recorded in an ODI series/tournament.

However, on many occasions, the bowlers have managed to get the better of the right-hander throughout his 16-year ODI career. Let's take a look at a detailed division of his modes of dismissal in the 50-over format:

Caught - 168 (70.29%)

The star cricketer has been unbeaten on 44 occasions out of 283 ODI innings. In 239 innings, Virat Kohli has been caught on 168 instances. These dismissals range from getting caught in the circle or near the fence, and also being caught behind by the keeper.

A simple catch dismissal takes up 48.5% of the overall percentage. New Zealand pacer Tim Southee has dismissed him caught the most times (5).

On the other hand, Kohli's key concern of being caught behind takes up around 22%. The bowlers have usually drawn him into playing a rash shot by pitching the ball outside the off-stump, and he has fallen prey by flashing his blade and getting caught by the keeper. West Indies speedster Ravi Rampaul has had him caught behind on three occasions.

Bowled - 34 (14.2%)

Virat Kohli has been bowled on 34 occasions in his illustrious ODI career. Australian speedster Nathan Coulter Nile has clean bowled him on two occasions, which is the highest by any bowler.

In an ODI game against England in 2018, Kohli was outfoxed by Adil Rashid, as the ball turned sharply and breached through his defense. The surprising reaction of Kohli after getting bowled went viral on social media.

The 2023 World Cup final saw Australian captain Pat Cummins inducing an inside edge from Kohli's bat and the ball went on to crash into the stumps.

Trapped LBW - 19 (7.9%)

Virat Kohli has suffered an LBW dismissal on 19 occasions in the 50-over format. Former Sri Lanka pacer Nuwan Kulasekara emerges as a front-runner with two LBW dismissals to his name.

Interestingly, Kohli was trapped LBW in his debut ODI by Kulasekara, where he could manage to score only 12 off 22.

The former Indian captain succumbed to a LBW dismissal in all games of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Run Out - 12 (5%)

Often termed as a quick runner between the wickets, Virat Kohli has been run-out on 12 occasions in the ODI format, which accounts for 5% of his dismissals.

Interestingly, Kohli has been involved in multiple run-outs with Rohit Sharma, with 'Hitman' going on to record double centuries on two occasions in 2013 and 2014.

The last instance of him getting run-out was way back in 2018 against South Africa in Gqeberha by JP Duminy.

Stumped - 5 (2.1%)

Stumping takes up the least share among the five mentioned dismissals in Virat Kohli's career.

Kohli's last stumping dismissal came in January 2023 in Raipur against New Zealand. Mitchell Santner's ball turned sharply and went past the bat's edge, as Kohli failed to drag his back foot at the right time.
