Waqar Younis should step down as Pakistan coach: Zaheer Abbas
Former Pakistani batting great Zaheer Abbas has demanded Waqar Younis‘ sacking as head coach of the Pakistan team after their comprehensive defeat at the hands of Bangladesh in the recently concluded limited-overs series. After a disappointing World Cup campaign where they lost to Australia in the quarter-finals, they were whitewashed 0-3 in the ODI series and lost the lone T20 international as well.
"There is no doubt that Waqar was a great cricketer but as a coach he has failed to deliver the goods and he should be replaced. I have never seen since (such) a spineless performance from the national team in my life. Losing is part of life but the way we played it just did not appear this was the Pakistan team playing against Bangladesh," Abbas said.
"There are no excuses for the way we have been defeated in Bangladesh. It is very sad for Pakistan cricket. I never imagined our players will perform so badly,” he added.
Abbas was himself part of the support staff last year but was asked to step down after Pakistan failed to qualify for the World T20 semi-finals in Bangladesh.
He also said that he would be willing to offer his help to the Pakistan team if the PCB approached him for his services.
