Wasim Akram narrates experience of surviving gun attack
There has been widespread panic and subsequent relief after it was reported earlier today that Pakistan legend Wasim Akram’s car had been shot at, it later appearing that he had survived an incident of road rage.
Theories had come up that it had been a terrorist attack, and even one that a Pakistani government official had tried an assassination attempt on Akram’s life.
Wasim narrated the incident to the media at the national stadium, clarifying that no murder attempt was made on his life because of who he was, and that such an incident could happen anywhere in the world, as PTI reports.
"It was just an accident when I was coming to the stadium. There is a lot of rush at this time and I was in the middle lane and a car hit my car from behind. I signaled to the other driver to come to the side, but he tried to make a fool of me and tried to race off; which irritated me a lot," Wasim said.
"I got a bit frustrated and chased that car and blocked it and while I was standing and arguing with the driver, a person stepped out from the back seat holding a gun and pointed it at me.
“But since the traffic had stopped and people recognised me as Wasim Akram the man then lowered his gun and fired at my car which was very scary.”
If gunman is so brave he should come forward: Akram
Akram also said that the gunman fled the scene after firing. The other occupants of the car followed him, leaving an empty car. The former Pakistan captain then noted down the license number of the car and called the police, who reacted immediately.
"I have shared all details with the police and I am confident they will apprehend the culprit. Because road rage can happen anywhere in the world be it England, Australia, USA but taking out a gun is not the way to settle such things," he said.
"And if this person who fired is so brave than he should come forward and face things.”
The incident did little deter the ‘Sultan of Swing’ however, who was back at his post conducting a hands-on training camp for emerging pace bowlers at Karachi, barely an hour after a gun had been pointed at him.
