Wasim Akram opens up about Pakistan Cricket and picks his favourite 'modern generation' fast bowlers

Akram talked about a variety of topics

Former Pakistan legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram recently had a long interaction with his fans on the social media platform Facebook. Akram was live for a fragrance brand that he endorses.

In the interaction, Akram answered a variety of questions ranging from his personal habits to the perfume brand he endorses. But the best questions were the ones related to Cricket. When asked to pick his favourite match ever, Akram said it was really difficult to pick a single match as he had a long career. He, however, settled with the 1992 World Cup final as his answer to the question.

A fan asked him who would be the closest successor to him in the current Pakistan team and the former fast bowler admitted that it has to be Mohammad Amir. He also added that Amir is young and bowls his heart out pretty much the way Akram used to do in his youth days.

Akram chose to pick Asad Shafiq as his favourite player in the current Pakistan team and said he was very impressed with the way he batted at the No.6 position in England. According to the legendary fast bowler, the way he came back with a gallant century after scoring a duck in the 1st innings shows his mental toughness.

Akram also added that there is no one in the current team to replace Misbah-ul-Haq. “Misbah is a calm head and is very mature both on and off the field, which makes him a great leader.” He also called him a ‘sensible and true leader’.

Akram also spoke about Junaid Khan who was in the headlines a few days ago for expressing his desire to leave Pakistan for better cricketing opportunities. Akram said Junaid was a talented fast bowler and he was actually surprised why he was not getting an opportunity at the Test level.

Lastly, he was asked to pick his favourite bowler of the modern generation and Akram picked three. He chose Mitchell Starc, Dale Steyn and James Anderson as the 3 best bowlers in the recent past. Akram was especially impressed with the way Mitchell Starc has been bowling in the recent times.

He applauded Starc for bowling his heart out in the Test series in Sri Lanka in pitches not conducive to fast bowling. The legend also said he can closely relate to Starc as he is fast, bowls immaculate yorkers, has great in swingers and is a left arm quick – the qualities that Wasim Akram himself boasted of.
