Watch: Martin Guptill interviewed by wife after winning Man of the Match award against Bangladesh
What's the story?
New Zealand on Wednesday made a recovery after facing a 1-4 defeat against India in the ODI series as the hosts defeated Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first ODI. Opener Martin Guptill was the hero for Kiwis, scoring a scintillating unbeaten hundred.
Martin was later adjudged the Man of the Match and in a distinctive event, he was interviewed by his own wife, Laura McGoldrick, who was hosting the presentation ceremony.
In case you didn't know
New Zealand looked ordinary against India in the five-match series, losing it by a huge 1-4 margin. However, the Black Caps made a strong comeback in the T20I series while continuing their good run in the first ODI against Bangladesh on Thursday.
The hosts chased down the 233-run total in a mere 44.3 overs with eight wickets in hand. Guptill smashed run-a-ball 117 runs while Henry Nicholas and Ross Taylor also added valuable runs.
The heart of the matter
The right-handed batsman went on to hit eight fours and four wickets in his knock, making sure he finished the match remaining unbeaten.
For his entertaining innings, the 32-year-old was named as the Man of the Match. Meanwhile, the Auckland-born cricketer had to face an awkward moment with his wife, Laura McGoldrick having been given the job of interviewing him.
However, the duo made sure to keep it all professional and made it look normal.
“The most pleasing thing was how the guys restricted Bangladesh up front with the ball. Losing 4 wickets in the first 10 is really tough to come back from. It (his back) is going to be a bit stiff. It is nice to see the boys home. Sometimes yes, sometimes no (time off from cricket helps) it still didn't feel fluent. At most parts, we talk to each other but he (Taylor) just lets me through as I bat longer,” said Guptill while speaking to his wife.
