[Watch] Steve Smith departs for 5 runs while attempting an expansive shot in ENG vs AUS 4th ODI

Australia batter Steve Smith's troubling run in ODI cricket continued as he was dismissed for five runs off six deliveries in the fourth match of the series against England at Lord's on Friday, September 24. He lost his wicket to Matthew Potts for the second time in the series after being castled by the pacer in Headingley recently.

Chasing a mammoth target of 313 in the rain-curtailed encounter, Smith came in at No.3 following Travis Head's dismissal. The opening partnership of 68 set up a solid platform for the visitors, and their batters needed to ensure continuity.

After playing out a couple of Brydon Carse's deliveries, Smith got off the mark with a boundary against Matthew Potts in the 10th over. The right-handed batter came down the track in a bid to take on the pacer through the off side to conclude the over.

However, the length ball moved a touch towards Smith after pitching. The hint of movement was enough to make contact with the inside edge as wicket-keeper Jamie Smith claimed the catch comfortably behind the stumps.

Have a look at the questionable shot selection and the dismissal right here:

Australia were reduced to 75-2 after 10 overs following Smith's wicket. The dismissal has triggered a collapse with two more wickets following soon after. At the time of writing, the Men in Yellow are placed at 91-4 in the 15th over.

Steve Smith has failed to record double figures in five of his last ten ODI innings

After a decent run in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which included a couple of fifties, Smith has struggled for consistency in the format. In the ODI series against West Indies at home to end the year, he scored an unbeaten fifty in Melbourne but followed it up with two poor scores.

In the ongoing series against England, he began with a decent 32 in the series opener in Trent Bridge, but was dismissed for four runs in Leeds. He scored a half century in Durham during the third ODI in a losing cause, following it up with yet another poor score at Lord's.
