Watch: Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble lead India's wishes on Garry Sobers' 80th birthday

On July 28, 1936, one of the most celebrated cricketers of all time was born. Those who witnessed Garfield St Aubrun Sobers in action would attest to his stature as the sport’s biggest entertainer.

80 years since his birth, the iconic West Indies all-rounder is still remembered for his all-round exploits in the international arena. Currently touring the Caribbean for a four-match Test series, India’s captain Virat Kohli and head coach Anil Kumble wished the left-hander on his birthday.

In a video posted on West Indies cricket’s official Facebook page, the visitors thanked Sobers for his contribution to the sport. Expressing a desire to meet the Barbados-born legend, the Indian skipper hailed his trend-setting legacy.

Kohli enthused, “Your (Sobers) performance on the field will always remain iconic and you were the very few who have changed the way the game is being played. Congratulations on a wonderful career and a life. It’s my pleasure to wish you on your 80th birthday.”

He added, “I am sure you will keep inspiring people whoever you meet all around the world. It’s been a pleasure watching you and I would surely like to meet you and have a discussion about the game someday. That’s one of my wishes I have in my life. Have a great birthday.”

Making his debut in March 1954, Sobers represented West Indies in 93 Tests and scored 8032 runs at an astounding average of 57.78 and took 235 wickets at a bowling average of 34.03. A genuine game-changer in all departments of the game, he pouched 109 catches too.

Meanwhile, Kumble affirmed, “Sir Garry, Wish you a very happy birthday. It’s really a great honor for me actually wish you. I wish I was there in person but all the very best. Happy 80th, you’ve brought a lot of joy to a lot of people and you are the greatest. (For me), growing up listening to your stories was fantastic and having met you on a couple of occasions was indeed a great honor.”

Joining the duo were Rohit Sharma who utilized the platform as well and shared his thoughts on Sobers. The elegant right-hander credited the dynamic cricketer as a huge motivation for him.

Rohit felt, “Dear Sir Garry Sobers, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you on your 80th birthday. I am glad that I could get this opportunity, you’ve been a great source of inspiration for millions of cricketers over the world with you have played. So, I would like to wish you all the very best and have a great year ahead.”

Having taken a 1-0 lead in the series, the Indians would want to carry on their momentum when the second Test begins in Jamaica from Saturday.
