Watson to prove fitness before India tour
Australia’s all-rounder Shane Watson will have to play a match in his redefined role as a non-bowling batsman before the squad for India’s tour is chosen.
Watson, who has been suffering from a calf strain that he suffered in the Melbourne Test, is expected to make a come-back in the domestic fixture for New South Wales on January 30.
Watson would be critical from Australia’s point of view as he has the ability to damage the opposition early in the innings which ultimately puts the opposition on the backfoot.
Shane Watson trained in SCG in front of Andy Bichel. Bichel said that he’s slowly getting better and needs to see his performance in the domestic fixture on January 30.
“He had a good running work-out. Andy Bichel and I were there when he did his running drills . . . but he didn’t bat,” John Inverarity said. “When we left it yesterday it was uncertain, but he’ll certainly play before the end of this month.”
Inverarity also said, “Watson’s inclusion would have to be made on faith rather than form and fitness”. If he doesn’t play the limited overs domestic fixture for New South Wales, then he certainly has a difficult task ahead of India’s tour.
In case he isn’t fit, then the selectors will have no other option but to pick Ed Cowan, who has been doing great for Australia. Ed Cowan could be a handy opener for Australia, but hasn’t played on turning tracks much and will have to be watchful.
