We were a few runs short: Ireland captain William Porterfield

After losing to Pakistan in their final cricket World Cup Pool B encounter on Sunday, Ireland skipper William Porterfield felt that they were a few runs short but was pleased by the team's overall performance in the mega-event.

“We were a few runs short. We would have liked a few more runs on the board. But overall we played well,” Porterfield said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Choosing to bat, the Ireland skipper smashed 107 off 131 balls to help his side post 237 on the board. But Pakistan were too good for the Irish as openers Sarfraz Ahmed (101 not out) and Ahmed Shehzad (63) helped their side win by seven wickets.

When Porterfield was asked if his ton against Pakistan was his best knock, he said, “The best ever innings only comes when you win.”

The 30-year-old said the team's confidence was high in the tournament and he hopes they get to play more matches to progress.

“The confidence has been high throughout. The fans have been fantastic. Hope we get more games, and progress from here,” Porterfield said.
