West Indies A level series against India A in 2nd ODI
West Indies A beat India A in the 2nd ODI of their 3-match series by 55 runs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
India A captain Yuvraj Singh, won the toss and chose to field first. The Windies got off to a slow start as Jaidev Unadkat and Sumit Narwal bowled a tight opening line.
But it all changed with the arrival of Jonathan Carter at the crease. Carter took the attack to the Indian bowlers and smashed a run-a-ball-century as he made 133 in just 132 balls. Along with support from Leon Johnson, his innings catapulted the Windies to a healthy 279 in their 50 overs.
Yusuf Pathan in particular, bore much of the impact from Carter’s assault, but picked up two wickets, while Vinay Kumar had three as he picked up Johnson to go with the scalp of both openers – Andre Fletcher and Kieron Powell.
Chasing a stiff target, the Indians lost two early wickets when Robin Uthappa, one of the heroes of the series versus New Zealand, and Mandeep Singh went early. Captain Yuvraj Singh joined Unmukt Chand at 18/2 and the pair put on a 64-run stand for the third wicket.
That was when Ashley Nurse struck with the crucial wicket of Chand. Kedar Jadhav and Naman Ojha also got good starts, but India A kept losing wickets at regular intervals and they could get no real partnership going.
Yuvraj and Yusuf Pathan fell with the score at 114, after which it was up to Ojha and Jadhav to try and take the Indians home. But, with the fall of Ojha’s wicket at 177, it all but ended any hopes that the Indians had of winning the match.
Tailenders Jaidev Unadkat and Shahbaz Nadeem put up a late flourish to take the team from 187 to a final score of 223, but it was merely delaying the inevitable.
The series is now level 1-1 after India A had won the first match by 77 runs.
The third and final ODI is scheduled to take place on Thursday at the same venue – the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
