Which eight teams have qualified for the Super 8 round of 2024 T20 World Cup?
The ICC Men's 2024 T20 World Cup kicked off with a match between Canada and co-hosts United States at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on June 1. Canada and the United States are part of Group A, which also features India, Pakistan, and Ireland. All the matches in Group A have been completed.
Similarly, all matches in Group B, featuring Australia, England, Scotland, Namibia, and Oman, have also taken place. If we look at Group D, South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Netherlands and Nepal have played out their scheduled group games.
The group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup will conclude with match number 40 to take place between West Indies and Afghanistan at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Tuesday, June 18. This will be a game in Group C, which also includes New Zealand, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea.
As per the tournament's format, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8 round. All the sides that will feature in the Super 8 of the 2024 T20 World Cup have already been confirmed. Take a look.
India (7 points)
India topped Group A with seven points, winning three of their four matches, while one game was abandoned due to a wet outfield. The Men in Blue began their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign with an eight-wicket win over Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
Their next two matches were also played in New York. They got the better of arch-rivals Pakistan by six runs in a low-scoring game, defending a total of 119. India then beat the United States by seven wickets, chasing down a target of 111. Their match against Canada in Florida was abandoned without the toss taking place.
United States (5 points)
Co-hosts United States are the second team from Group A to qualify for the Super 8 round of the 2024 T20 World Cup. They began their campaign with an impressive seven-wicket win over Canada in Dallas, chasing down a challenging target of 195.
The US then stunned Pakistan in another match played in Dallas. Chasing 159, they tied the game by scoring 159-3 and went on to clinch the Super Over in an incredible display. United States went down to India by seven wickets in New York but qualified for the Super 8 after their match against Ireland in Florida was abandoned due to rain.
Australia (8 points)
ODI and Test world champions Australia will go into the Super 8 round of the 2024 T20 World Cup on an unbeaten streak. They topped Group B, with four wins from four matches.
The Aussies began the tournament with a hard-fought 39-run win against Oman in Barbados. They went on to beat England at the same venue by 36 runs. Australia then hammered Namibia by nine wickets in Antigua before registering a five-wicket win against Scotland in St Lucia, overcoming a batting wobble.
England (5 points)
England are the second team to qualify for the Super 8 round of the 2024 T20 World Cup from Group B. They finished the group stage with five points, winning two matches and losing one, in which one game produced no result.
Only 10 overs were possible in England's first match against Scotland in Barbados, which produced no result. At the same venue, then went down to the Aussies by 36 runs in Barbados. England registered a crucial eight-wicket win over Oman in Antigua and confirmed their place in the Super 8 round by getting the better of Namibia by 41 runs [DLS method] in a rain-curtailed contest.
Afghanistan (6 points)
Afghanistan have qualified for the Super 8 round from Group C, having won their first three matches. They began the tournament with a comprehensive 125-run triumph over Uganda in Guyana and followed it up with a brilliant 84-run victory over New Zealand at the same venue. Defending a total of 159, Afghanistan bowled out the Kiwis for 75 in 15.2 overs.
The Asian side confirmed their berth in the Super 8 round of the 2024 T20 World Cup by beating Papua New Guinea by seven wickets in Trinidad. Chasing 96, Afghanistan got home in 15.1 overs.
West Indies (6 points)
West Indies, one of the hosts of the 2024 T20 World Cup, have also made it to the Super 8 round from Group C. Like Afghanistan, they have also played three and won three.
The Windies began their World Cup campaign with an unconvincing five-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in Guyana. They went on to hammer Uganda by 134 runs at the same venue. In their third group game in Trinidad, they registered a crucial 13-run win over New Zealand.
South Africa (8 points)
South Africa have not been at their best, but have still managed to win four out of four matches and have topped Group D. They finished the group stage with eight points and a run rate of +0.470.
The Proteas kicked off their T20 World Cup journey with a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in New York on a sluggish batting surface. They overcame a batting wobble to beat the Netherlands by four wickets at the same venue and also got the better of Bangladesh by four wickets. They survived another massive scare to sneak home to a one-run win over Nepal in St Vincent.
Bangladesh (6 points)
Bangladesh are the second team from Group D to qualify for the Super 8 of the 2024 T20 World Cup. They finished the group stage with six points from four games, winning three matches and losing one.
Bangladesh kicked off their World Cup campaign with a close two-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Dallas. They went down to the Proteas by four runs in another thrilling contest in New York. Bangladesh concluded the group stage with wins over the Netherlands and Nepal by 25 runs and 21 runs, respectively.
