Who won the AUS vs BAN Super 8 match of 2024 T20 World Cup after it couldn’t resume due to heavy rains?
Australia were in the driver's seat in their 2024 T20 World Cup Super 8 encounter against Bangladesh in Antigua on Thursday, June 20 before rain put a stop to the proceedings.
The clash marked the first match in the Super 8 stage for both sides after they progressed through the group stage. The contest was ultimately abandoned as rain had the final say, and Mitchell Marsh and Co. were awarded the points as they had recorded a total over the par score.
After opting to bowl first, the Australian bowling unit made light work of the opposition. Mitchell Starc struck in his first over to dismiss Tanzid Hasan for a three-ball duck. Bangladesh were encouraged by knocks from Najmul Shanto and Towhid Hridoy, but could not pose much of a threat to the Men in Yellow.
Bolstered by Pat Cummins' hattrick at the back end of the innings, Australia reduced Bangladesh to 140-8 in 20 overs. In reply, the duo of Travis Head and David Warner guided their side to a breezy start in the run chase. Australia compiled 59 runs in the powerplay, before rain made its first appearance. The play was halted for a bit, and even at that point, Australia were well ahead of the DLS par score.
Although Rishad Hossain struck twice in two overs after the rain break, the damage was already done. Warner coasted to his fifty and Australia looked all set to wrap up the game with plenty of overs to spare. However, rain interrupted proceedings yet again when Australia were placed at 100-2 in 11.2 overs.
According to the calculations, the DLS par score was 72-2, which meant that Australia were 28 runs ahead at the time when play was stopped. As a result, the Men in Yellow emerged as comfortable winners in the end.
India and Australia begin the T20 World Cup Super 8 stage along expected lines
Group 1 of the Super 8 stage has witnessed two lopsided matches to kickstart things. India made easy work of Afghanistan in Barbados earlier in the day to claim their first set of points with a dominant net run-rate as well. Following that, Australia also put up a near-flawless display against Bangladesh to place one foot in the semi-finals.
Australia are next scheduled to face Afghanistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup on Saturday, June 22 at the Arnos Vale Ground in St. Vincent.
