Windies level youth series 3-3 against Bangladesh

Albion (Guyana), Oct 20 (IANS/CMC) The Under-19 West Indies side levelled their Youth One-Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh after a half-century from Shimron Hetmyer and Fabian Allen set them up and steady bowling from captain Ramaal Lewis formalised a 36-run victory here.

Lewis followed up a valuable 13 not out with 3/35 from his allotted 10 overs to earn the man-of-the-match award as the Windies bowled out the Bangladeshis for 204 in 46.3 overs in the penultimate match of the series at the Albion Sports Complex on Saturday.

The result brought the home team level 3-3 in the seven match series.

Hetmyer had led the way with 65 and Allen was unbeaten on 50 as West Indies reached 240/8 in 50 overs after choosing to bat. Tristan Coleman made 36 and Taryck Gabriel added 28 but Bangladesh failed to have things go all their way. Jubair Hossain was the pick of the bowlers with 3/56.

The Windies then bowled steadily to ensure Bangladesh never ran away with the scoring rate as Joyraz Sheik led all scorers in the match with 78 off 106 balls, that included five fours.

The hosts claimed regular wickets, leading the run rate to mount and panic ruined the chase for the visitors as no other batsman reached 30.

Earlier, Hetmyer struck half-a-dozen boundaries from 97 balls and shared successive half-century stands that steadied the West Indies after they stumbled to 23/2. Hetmyer put on 76 for the third wicket with Coleman and added 51 for the fourth wicket with Gabriel before he became Jubair’s first scalp.

A period of turbulence saw the Windies stumble to 191/8 before Lewis came to the crease and put on an unbroken 49 runs for the ninth wicket with Allen, whose 38-ball innings contained two fours and three sixes, helping the Caribbean side reach their highest total for the series.

The series concludes on Monday at Everest in Georgetown.
