World Cup 2019: How Rohit Sharma has capitalized on fielding lapses in the tournament
Rohit Sharma has led the charge with the bat for India in the ongoing World Cup 2019. The opener has played a huge role in India's wins as he has played crucial knocks in most of the games. He has capitalized not only his good form but also went onto register match-winning knocks after being dropped earlier in the innings.
The prolific right-hand batsman has been producing runs in literally every game of the tournament. A striking parallel between all his defining innings is the fact that he was dropped very early in his innings.
With his counter-attacking knock of 104 off 92 balls, Rohit Sharma became the leading run-scorer of the World Cup with 544 runs. The 32-year old came out all guns blazing from the start, a probable change in mindset after a slow start in the game against England. His first scoring shot was a six off Mashrafe Mortaza over deep square leg.
He tried attacking Mustafizur Rahman with a pull shot but mistimed it. Tamim Iqbal dropped the sitter at deep mid-wicket. That was the only blip in his flawless innings as he stroked his fourth century off the tournament.
This isn't the first time that Rohit has played a crucial knock after being dropped. He was dropped on one off a Kagiso Rabada bouncer in India's opening game. The right-hander shrugged it off to score 122.
It happened in India's second game as well when he was put down by Nathan Coulter-Nile when he had just two runs to his name. It was a tough chance at mid-wicket as his flick flew past the fielder.
India's vice-captain was fortunate to get a life from England's Test captain Joe Root. The opener went for an expansive drive but the ball flew off the edge of the bat and went to second slip at catchable height. But Root spilt it to the surprise of everyone. Rohit capitalized on it by scoring a magnificent century on a tough wicket.
Just like the saying as fortune favours the brave, the rub of the green has gone to the liking of Rohit Sharma. Fans will be hoping that it lasts till July 14.
