New Zealand v South Africa - ICC Cricket World Cup 2019
New Zealand v South Africa - ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

New Zealand won a last-over thriller by 4 wickets against South Africa with the help of a Kane Williamson century in Match 25 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at Birmingham, Edgbaston.

New Zealand won the toss and put South Africa into bat first on a wicket that was slow and two-paced. Hashim Amla stood up for the struggling South African side with a laboured 55-run knock off 83 balls. South Africa struggled for momentum and acceleration until the very end of the inning when Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller combined to take the team to a fighting total of 241/6.

On this tricky Edgbaston surface, the chase for New Zealand was never going to be easy and it proved to be true. South Africa bowled disciplined line and length as New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals. At one stage New Zealand were 137-5 and South Africa seemed to have an upper hand. However, a brilliant knock from Colin de Grandhomme and South Africa's own lapses under pressure meant that New Zealand came out of their precarious situation. Skipper Kane Williamson was the major beneficiary of South Africa's mediocre fielding efforts as he went on to score 106 runs off 138 balls. Williamson's unbeaten knock helped New Zealand overcome the South African challenge in order to maintain a perfect record at the ongoing World Cup.

So, let's take a look at the updated Most Runs and Most Wickets lists after this match.

Most Runs

Kane Williamson's century helped him to move into the Top 10 list for Most Runs in the 2019 World Cup. He now holds the 8th spot with 225 runs from 4 matches.

Most Wickets

New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson continued his superb exploits with a 3-wicket haul against South Africa. He now has 11 wickets to his name from 4 matches. Matt Henry and South Africa's Imran Tahir remain in the top 10 despite wicketless spells in this match. On the other hand, Chris Morris entered the Top 10 with his 3-wicket haul. Morris now has 9 scalps in the tournament so far.
