Mohammed Shami was not in the playing XI at the beginning of the World Cup. He got a chance against Afghanistan after Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up an injury during the match against Pakistan.

Shami took 14 wickets from four matches in the World Cup 2019. He also grabbed a hat-trick against Afghanistan and a five-wicket haul against England. He performed brilliantly in the World Cup but was dropped after he conceded too many runs in the death overs against Bangladesh. Shami was the second-highest wicket-taker for India after Jasprit Bumrah.
