In their fifth game of the World Cup campaign, the hosts blew away a hapless Afghanistan bowling attack and registered 397-6 at the end of their innings. England won the toss and opted to bat first on the same strip used for the India-Pakistan encounter. Root and Bairstow contributed handsomely to their team’s cause but the undisputed star of the show was their skipper Eoin Morgan. Morgan came out to bat in the 30th over and completely changed the course of the game with a mixture of perfect timing and ruthless aggression.

He scored his first six off Gulbadin Naib by powerfully striking a short delivery into the stands at deep midwicket region. Rashid Khan was supposed to be the one bowler who could halt the momentum of England’s innings and conventional wisdom would suggest to play him out cautiously. But Morgan had other ideas as he took a liking for Rashid and completely demolished him. He scored 18 runs off the 36th over bowled by Rashid Khan. He got to his half-century by a trademark pull into the cow corner. The usually reliable Mohammad Nabi also took a heavy beating as Morgon scored consecutive but contrasting sixes off him in the 41st over.

He yet again ripped apart Rashid in the 43rd over to bring up a memorable century. The bowlers were left clueless as all sorts of deliveries found their way into the stands. He did not lose any steam after reaching his hundred as even decent deliveries were met with utter disdain. In the 47th over bowled by the medium pacer Gulabdin Naib, Morgan hit three maximums and broke the world record for most sixes by a player in a ODI innings. Naturally, an innings of this magnitude elicited a lot of reactions from celebrities and fans alike.
