WWE Champion Jinder Mahal meets Sachin Tendulkar in India
What's the story?
WWE champion Jinder Mahal has been in India for the past couple of days to promote the WWE Live Event that is scheduled to take place at the Indra Gandhi Indoor stadium in Delhi on December 8 and 9.
To promote the event, the champion himself, along with his storyline apprentices the Singh Brothers, Sunil Singh and Samir Singh, flew to India to publicize the event.
As a part of the program, Jinder Mahal visited legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, presented him and his son with his "Modern day Maharaja" t-shirt and invited him to be a part of the Live event. According to WWE's official broadcasters in India, Sachin is set to attend the Live shows in New Dehli in December.
In case you didn't know...
After being released in 2014, Jinder returned to WWE last year and to everyone's surprise, became the no. 1 contender for Randy Orton's WWE Championship and later that month, the Indo-Canadian became the 50th WWE Champion after defeating the Viper at WWE Backlash.
He also defended the title against Orton at WWE Money in the Bank and WWE Battleground before coming out on top against Shinsuke Nakamura at WWE Summerslam and WWE Hell in a Cell.
The details
A couple of months ago, WWE announced that the superstars of WWE Raw would tour India for two Live shows in the month of December. Earlier this month, WWE COO Triple H visited Mumbai to confirm and promote the Live event and conceded that Jinder and the Singh brothers would be a part of the event in spite of the Indian-origin wrestlers being a part of WWE SmackDown Live.
What's next?
In the main event of the Live shows in Delhi, Jinder will take on former Universal champion Kevin Owens for the WWE Championship. Apart from Owens, Jinder Mahal and the Singh brothers, the superstars who will be turning up for the shows include all the three Shield members, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, Braun Strowman, WWE Raw women's champion Alexa Bliss and Sasha Banks.
Author's take
This is a great initiative by the WWE to bring the promotion to a country like India that has a massive audience. The promotional activities are heading in the right direction. Inviting Sachin is a masterstroke as the Indian cricketer is a superstar among the fans in the country and his presence will help attract people in huge numbers to the shows on December 8 and 9.
