"Yuvraj Singh deserves every penny Delhi have spent on him" - Sunil Gavaskar

Yuvraj Singh will be seen playing for the Delhi Daredevils this IPL season

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his happiness over the purchase of Yuvraj Singh by the Delhi Daredevils, adding that the 33-year-old left-hander completely deserved the record sum of Rs. 16 crore that he was bought for by the Delhi-based franchise during the IPL auction in Bangalore yesterday.

"He deserves every penny Delhi have spent on him. Yuvraj has gone through a lot and I am sure he is worth the money. Delhi need him to make an impact this year," Gavaskar told NDTV.

Yuvraj was released by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the IPL trading window after playing just a single season for the franchise which paid a whopping Rs 14 crore for his services last year.

Yuvraj can still play for India: Gavaskar

Yuvraj was earlier left out of India’s 15-man squad for the ongoing World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, raising valid doubts about his India future. But Gavaskar feels that the southpaw still has a chance of making a comeback to the national side, with him having shown in the Ranji Trophy this season that he still has the appetite for scoring big runs.

"When one door closes, another bigger door opens and this is an opportunity for Yuvraj. He can still make a comeback to the national team and he has shown the resolve in domestic cricket," the former India opener said.

Gavaskar further said that the presence of Yuvraj in the Delhi Daredevils would act as a catalyst for more people turning up to watch them in action at the Ferozshah Kotla this season, with the fan base perhaps having dwindled in recent times owing to their poor performances.

“He is such a massive brand ambassador. Plus, Yuvraj will ensure that the Delhi fans are back to support their team,” he added.
