Yuzvendra Chahal: All you need to know about the Royal Challengers Bangalore spinner
Royal Challengers Bangalore leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been quite impressive for the Bangalore-based IPL franchise this season. RCB are currently placed 7th in the points table. At a time when their bowling has let them down considerably, Chahal has been one of the bowlers who has managed to make a slight difference for Virat Kohli’s side. He has picked up 6 wickets in five games for his team so far this season.
Here are 10 things you should know about the youngster:
1) Yuzvendra Singh Chahal is a Haryana-born bowler, who was born on 23 July 1990. He plays the role of a leg- spinner.
2) He made his first-class debut on 3 November 2009 for Haryana, against Madhya Pradesh and finished the game with an economy of 3.06.
3) He has 37 wickets from 30 innings in his first-class career, with best bowling figures of 4/22 and one four-wicket haul.
4) Chahal made his debut for Haryana in the 50-overs format on 10 February 2010 against Punjab. He has played 23 innings and has taken 25 wickets at an economy rate of 4.19. His best bowling figure in an innings in limited-overs is 6/24, which also happens to be his only 5-wicket haul.
5) He made his Twenty20 debut, also against Punjab, on 20 October 2009. He has played a total of 71 matches picking up 67 wickets while averaging 25.29, at an economy rate of 7.26.
6) Chahal rose to prominence when he took 34 wickets in the National Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy in 2009. The attacking leg-spinner ended the tournament as the leading wicket-taker.
7) The 25-year-old has also represented India in Chess at the junior level. He was the part of the Indian Under-16 Chess team and is the only player to represent India in chess and cricket. His name is listed on FIDE's official site.
8) After his impressive domestic run, he was signed by the Mumbai Indians in 2011 but did not get any game that year. In that year’s Champions League T20 he featured in the playing eleven for Mumbai in all of their games. The leg-spinner starred in Mumbai’s victory over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final with a superb spell of 3-0-9-2.
9) Chahal finally made his IPL debut on 24 April 2013 against the Kolkata Knight Riders, after not getting a single game for Mumbai Indians for two years.
10) The leg-spinner was signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014 for a base price of INR 10 lakh. He has since then proved to be a boon to RCB’s bowling attack and is currently playing his third season for the Bangalore-based franchise. In his last five innings for RCB he has figures of- 2/43, 0/23, 1/33, 2/27, and 1/38.
