Zaheer Khan may become the next bowling coach of India: Reports

Zaheer Khan has the experience and technical knowhow

Reports are rife that former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan might be roped in as the next bowling coach of the Indian cricket team. There are reports that Anil Kumble is looking for experienced Indian bowlers to fit the bill and Zaheer might just be the answer to the requirements.

Sourav Ganguly, who was present in the Cricket Advisory Committee which selected Anil Kumble as the head coach said that the ball is entirely in the court of the BCCI as far as the decision to appoint the set of assistants coach.

"I have no knowledge about the availability of Zaheer as the likely candidate. It is up to the BCCI to decide on the final name and the fact if Zaheer will be available all throughout the year", Ganguly said.

The former skipper also reiterated that the CAC will have no say in the appointment of the assistant coaches. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman are the other members of the BCCI appointed CAC.

"It is Anil's prerogative. Since he is a bowler, maybe, he did not appoint a bowling coach. I also have read in the newspapers that he may rope in pace bowling coach later. Let me stress that Sachin and Laxman have no role in appointing Anil's assistant coaches," Ganguly added.

Earlier, Ganguly had said that former Indian team director, Ravi Shastri was offered the role of the batting coach, an offer which did not reach its conclusion.

Ever since Anil Kumble was chosen over Ravi Shastri as the head coach, there have been frequent jibes taken by Shastri. Ganguly too clarified his stance and addressed his displeasure at being singled out.

While Shastri hit out at Ganguly for not being present during his interview, the former Indian skipper lashed back by saying that for such a prestigious position, a person should be present, and not be holidaying overseas.

The Indian team is currently in the West Indies and have started their tour with a draw against the Board President's XI.
