Tour de France 2016: Day 5 Results - Greg Van Avermaet wins Stage 5
Greg Van Avermaet of team BMC Racing won stage five of the Tour de France to take his second victory on the Tour after a gruelling five and a half hours of being on the saddle. He will be taking over the leader’s yellow jersey from Peter Sagan. Van Avermaet, a cobbled classics specialist gave fellow Belgian Thomas De Gendt of Lotto-Soudal a run for his money about 17.4km from the end of the 216km stage from Limoges to Le Lioran on Day 5.
He finished the race in 5:31:36 to finish first. He was followed by De Gendt who came second with +02:34, and Rafal Majka of Team Tinkoff came third with +05:04. Chris Froome (Team Sky), Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quick Step), Dan Martin (Etixx-Quick Step), and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) all crossed the line with the same time. However, Alberto Contador of team Tinkoff dropped in the final kilometre to lose further time.

Day 6 will see Van Avermaet of Belgium take the lead with the yellow jersey as cyclists will cover a distance of 190.5km from Arpajon-sur-Cère to Montauban in the flat stage of the race. He also leads the general classification after day 5 results. Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe of team Etixx - Quick-Step is second, and Spaniard Alejandro Valverde of team Movistar Team comes third. Joaquin Rodriguez of Team Katusha is fourth in the list, and he is followed by one of the favourites to win the Tour, Chris Froome of Great Britain at fifth position.
