Can you play as your companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
One of the biggest questions players might have is whether you can play as your companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The previous games allowed you to take control of your party members to some extent, and you could even use their skills to turn the tide of war in your favor.
Unfortunately, EA has decided to go a different route this time around, and you won't be able to play as your companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. They will be AI-controlled party members who will synergize their attacks based on what you do. Meanwhile, you will be controlling the protagonist, Rook.
Let's take a look at everything you need to know about the companion system in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
You cannot play as your companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Unlike its predecessor, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will not allow you to take control of your party members. In an interview with Edge Magazine, game Director, Corinne Busche explained that the developers have decided to scrap the player-controlled companions in favor of an AI-controlled party.
"On the experiential side, we wanted you to feel like you are Rook"
This is likely due to Veilguard's action-focused gameplay, instead of the tactical approach that the previous Dragon Age games had. As was showcased from the gameplay reveal of Veilguard, the combat is much more action-centric, where every second counts.
However, although you won't be able to play as your companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare does provide some handy tools that you can employ.
The companion system in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The companion system in Dragon Age The Veilguard is quite similar to previous BioWare titles, except for a few key differences. Unlike previous DA games, you won't be able to control your companions directly, but there is an ability wheel, that allows you to select which of your party member's skills you will be able to use.
You will also be able to bond, and even romance companions in Dragon Age The Veilguard. Bonding with them unlocks special skills that will synergize with your play style. Similar to previous games, each companion will also provide a special side quest that will explore their backstory once your bond with them is strong enough.
You can increase your bond with companions by taking them on missions and considering their opinions when making a decision.
