Dragon Age The Veilguard walkthrough: How to complete the House of the Dead quest

Among the many side missions in Dragon Age The Veilguard, the House Of The Dead quest is part of Emmrich's storyline and can be found at the Lighthouse. Completing the mission increases the bond level with Emmrich and the party members who join Rook on this endeavor to take down a rogue Necromancer posing a threat to the Fade.

The quest takes players to Blackthorne Manor, where the rogue Necromancer was last spotted. Below is a guide on how to complete this quest.

The House of the Dead quest in Dragon Age The Veilguard

Travel to Blackthorne Manor, where Emmrich will inform Rook about the Necromancer and its activities. Head straight on through the main door, and into the Grand Foyer area. Go up the stairs and to the right, following the mission marker.

The prompt will now require the party to jump into the Blackthorne Library area, where Emmrich will inform Rook of the dangers behind the door with seals around it. Pick up the Skeleton Key from the table next to the door and head north toward the first of the two markers that show up.

A prompt will appear to open a door using the key; do it, and you'll enter a new area called Abandoned Study. Follow the markers to reach a room with a tortured green skeleton. While Emmrich exclaims at the severity of the sacrifices, four Frenzied Shade enemies show up. They are vulnerable to Cold attacks and resist Necrotic, so take them down accordingly.

Once they're defeated, Emmrich will release the spirit. Retrace your steps to the Library, and head towards the other end of Blackthorne Manor, where the marker will guide you toward a door. Open it and enter the Upper Halls area, and follow the marker to reach another area with a tortured skeleton, this time in the Guest Room.

They have the same vulnerabilities as the previous set of enemies, so take them down accordingly. Emmrich will free this spirit as well, which will now unlock the door with seals around it. Head back to the Library area, and enter the door. A portal will lead the party to the Fade.

Once in the Fade, head past the large entrance to find two routes — one on the left leading to a locked door, and the other leading to a path behind some rocks. Head right behind the rocks to find a wisp. Capture it, and use it to open the locked door. Then, follow the marker to a lower level, where some enemies will show up.

Apart from some smaller enemies, there will be a Fire Demon. Avoid its attacks, and attack with Cold damage, its weakness. Once the Fire Demon is defeated, follow the marker into a library-like area. Head up the stairs to the left, and follow the marker. Emmrich will remark on finding more victims, so continue following the path.

A cutscene will play, with Johanna Hezenkoss being revealed as the rogue Necromancer. After a brief conversation, she disappears and leaves some enemies for the party to fight against. These enemies are weak to Fire damage and resist Cold, so use Fire attacks to take them down.

Once the enemies are defeated, Emmrich tries to free the final trapped spirit, but it gets captured in Johanna's lantern. The mission updates to now have the party leave the Fade.

While there seems to be no way out upon reaching the marker, head back to find a candle in a pillar. After Emmrich comments on the need to find another candle, head north-east towards some ruins near the area where the spirits were previously fought. Pick up the second candle from a pillar in the ruins, place the two candles on the marked areas, and light them.

A path will open up, allowing the party to head back to the manor and exit the Fade. Now, Johanna will angrily remark on how quickly the party escaped, and it is time to confront her. Head back to the main hall of Blackthorne Manor, following the marker till it leads to a large door. Interact with it to start a cutscene where the party confronts Johanna.

After the cutscene ends, a battle will ensue with the Rampant Ego boss. It is weak to Necrotic damage, resists Electric attacks, and has an armor bar that must be depleted to damage it effectively. Once it is defeated, talk to Emmrich and leave Blackthorne Manor.

As a reward, you will be given 3000 XP, 100 Mourn Watch Strength, and a bond increase with Emmrich and the other party members who joined you.
