Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake: How to change classes (Alltrades Abbey)
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake features a class change system at Alltrades Abbey. This is a completely optional system and location in the game. You don’t ever have to visit it, or the Tower of Transcendence if you don’t wish. However, if you want to make your party as powerful as possible, you’re going to want to make a few trips here throughout your game—especially if you want to fight the game’s optional superboss.
Alltrades Abbey in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is also the only way to unlock the Sage class. There are two ways to do this, and both of them require you to visit this location in the game. If you want to know the risks and rewards, we’re here to help.
Note: This guide features minor spoilers for post-game of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.
How to use Alltrades Abbey’s class change system in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake
You can find Alltrades Abbey to change classes in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake by heading Northeast of Baharata and Kidnapper’s Cave. Further still to the north, you’ll find the Tower of Transcendence. There’s even a save NPC outside of this area, in case you decide you aren’t happy with your transformation.
Once your characters are a minimum of level 20, you can come to Alltrades Abbey, speak to the Abbot and request a class change. However, the only character that can’t do this is the Hero—they’re a Hero/Heroine, after all! However, there are important caveats to know.
This character, after you change their job, will be back to level 1. They retain all spells and all skills and lose about half of their stats. They will retain their personality, but this can be changed with books/items if you want to change how their stats progress. They will also level up a bit faster, once they’ve job changed as well.
You can become any job but the Hero in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. There's also the Sage class, which can only be unlocked in two ways. The first is by finding the Words of Wisdom ook. The second requires you to level a Gadabout to level 20. That character can also become a Sage, but that’s a serious undertaking. Thankfully, there are two copies of Words of Wisdom in the game.
It’s worth it to repeatedly change character’s classes, but keep in mind what spells/abilities they haven’t unlocked yet. I wouldn’t change someone from Pilgrim until they’ve learned Kazing and Multiheal, for example. This will make some bosses much easier to handle.
You can make some truly devastating characters, though. For example, going Wizard, Sage, then Thief makes a high-agility spellcaster with tons of damage, and even melee options.
New functions of Alltrades Abbey in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake
Alltrades Abbey in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has some brand-new functionality! Outside of the building, if you head east or west, you’ll find two useful NPCs. At the northwest of the building is the Servant of Appello, who can rename your characters. It’s not necessarily useful, but if you completely change a character and feel they need a new name, too, visit them.
If you walk around the building and go northeast instead, you’ll meet Healizah. They can customize the hair color and voice of your party members. This works on everyone but the Hero. You can change the Hero’s hair color once you defeat Xenlong in the post-game and make a wish to be the Most Fashionable Hero.
Alltrades Abbey is easily one of the most important locations in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. You can make your party as powerful as you want, provided you have the patience enough to grind them through multiple party changes.
