Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake: How to beat Ripper of the Rift

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake features some new bosses, like the Ripper of the Rift. Before you can claim the Magic Key in the Pyramid, you’re going to have to fight this lackey of Baramos and its allies. This was an incredibly difficult fight for me because I had no idea it was going to show up here. That’s one of the fun new features in this RPG — plenty of new encounters where you least expect them.

While the Robbin ‘Ood boss in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake was relatively simple and benign, Ripper of the Rift didn’t come to mess about. If you’re having trouble with this terrifying new boss, we’re here to help you claim that key.

Tips to defeat the Ripper of the Rift in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake

The Ripper of the Right doesn’t come alone in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. He brings a pair of Kylla enemies with him. This enemy type didn’t appear in DQ3 but made its first appearance in Dragon Quest 2. These foes need to be the first focus, so all three of them aren’t pounding away at you during the whole boss fight. They can cast Crack (Ice) and are resistant to Fire Magic.

Another reason this fight is so deadly is that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake’s Ripper of the Rift can cast Woosh and Swoosh, which is AOE Wind Magic. He can also cast Dazzle, which makes your party Hallucinate (harder to hit enemies).

All enemies in this encounter are resistant to Explosion Magic. Before this fight goes too far, make sure to use Acceleratle/Kabuff to get your party moving swiftly and take less damage. You also have to keep an eye out on Kylla’s ability to Glare Balefully (Sleep Spell). If this happens to multiple people in a fight, cast Cock-a-Doodle-Doo to wake them up.

These enemies don’t hit especially hard, but their spells can be devastating. Focus on one Kylla at a time with Flame Slash, Double-Edged Slash/Mercurial Thrust, and Frizzle to defeat it in a few turns. These foes can also cast Heal on themselves, so be aware of that, too.

Keep your Pilgrim/Healer free to buff, debuff, and heal as necessary. Kasap is definitely nice to have at this point to make each target take more damage.

I didn’t think to try it in this fight, but do try and Fizzle the Ripper of the Rift in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake; bosses can be affected by status ailments in this game. Don’t spam spells on your Pilgrim, though, since they will occasionally need to cast Midheal.

The fight’s much easier when you can focus on the Keeper of the Rift in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. When alone, he’s more likely to use Wind Sickles to hit one party member for around 50 points of damage. He also seems to take two attacks more when alone.

This is a long fight, so try and make sure you have at least one Prayer Ring. You should have one or two at this point. The healer is going to need that extra MP to keep up with the damage that the Ripper of the Rift doles out in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. Thankfully, he doesn’t have any other fun surprise attacks.

If you can put him to sleep or fizzle him out, the fight can become much easier, so it’s worth attempting. At this point, it’s just a battle of attrition - he can’t heal himself, nor can he bring more allies to the field.

Just whittle away at him with Frizzle, Mercurial Slash/Double-Edged Thrust, and Flame Slash until he’s defeated.

At this point, you can claim your key and move on. There are plenty of other challenges that await, even in this dungeon, if you’re willing to brave them.
