What does the Shroud do in Enshrouded?

The Shroud in Enshrouded acts as a survival mechanic, making players pick and choose when and where they explore. These are often incredibly dangerous areas, featuring enemies on top of the fog that slowly chokes these parts of the map out. While it is a nice way to add some atmosphere to an open-world survival/crafting game, in this case, it’s a very real thing that players have to be wary of.

There are important areas of the map shrouded in this fog such as Umber Hollow, which is home to enemies you can farm for Ammonia Glands.\

There are plenty of areas packed with this dense Shroud in Enshrouded, but what does it really do, and can you protect yourself against it? Let's find out!

Overview of the Shroud in Enshrouded

The Shroud in Enshrouded is a deep, dense fog that surrounds certain parts of the game map. As far as the game’s lore goes, a character known as the Wanderer introduced a powerful Elixir to the land, which brought incredible power with it.

People would then create Elixir Wells, so they could get as much of this power as possible, but with that, came the Shroud. It’s essentially a punishment or after-effect of the Elixir the Wanderer put out into the world.

Once you enter the Shroud in Enshrouded, you’ll immediately see a timer show up, giving you five minutes to do whatever it is you need to and get out. Thankfully, if you leave the Shrouded section, the timer will reset, and you can go back in. This is great for areas of fog that aren’t very large, where you just want to get in and farm materials or kill an enemy.

There are actually two types of Shroud in Enshrouded, too. You’ll occasionally see sections of these areas that have a reddish fog to them instead. You want to avoid spending time in those at all costs. Only go in if you absolutely need to - or if you’re using a cheat engine like WeMod, or something.

While in these locations, your timer goes down faster, and thus, the peril increases. However, as you increase the power of your Flame Altar, you can increase the time you spend in this Shroud.

When in these Shrouded areas, look for Hourglass Capsules (glowing red containers). These will reset your timer immediately, so use them wisely. You can also find Return Beacons to refill your Shroud timer.

Finally, there are also Shroud Survival Flasks, which can add two minutes to your timer, for the next forty-five minutes. These are incredibly useful if you have to spend some time grinding in a Shroud-filled area. For example, in order to make Nitrate in Enshrouded, you need to have Shroud Liquid, which comes from chopping down Mushrooms in Shrouded areas.

If you should be in the Shroud when the timer runs out, you’ll start immediately taking damage, and essentially, you’ll die almost immediately. There’s no mercy from the deadly fog, that’s for sure. If you’re finding yourself getting lost in these areas, look for Lamp Posts or paths on the ground to lead you to safety.
