Everything you need to know about shield nerfs in Rainbow Six Siege Operation Collision Point
Operation Collision Point is set to introduce some shield nerfs in Rainbow Six Siege. This is because the updates made in Operation Deadly Omen Y9S1 made it very frustrating to play against Shield Operators. The freedom to sprint towards your opponent with the suppression mechanic rarely triggering and the presence of a melee priority made winning 1v1s almost too simple and unrewarding.
Alongside all the changes coming in Operation Collision Point Y9S4, the shield update in Rainbow Six Siege is being well received by Defenders.
This article goes over all the changes introduced to implement the necessary shield nerfs in Rainbow Six Siege.
Changes coming with the shield nerfs in Rainbow Six Siege Operation Collision Point
The changes introduced to all the Ballistic Shields in Rainbow Six Siege focus on increasing the utility of suppressive fire. This tool allows Defenders to slow down Shield Operators and oppose aggressive players so they can reposition or set up crossfires with teammates.
The number of bullets required to activate suppressive fire has been decreased from 10 to 5. The number of bullets required to achieve maximum suppressive fire intensity has also been lowered from 40 to 20. This ensures that defenders who generally wield SMGs with smaller magazines can also be safe by activating suppressive fire on Shield Operators who are onto them.
Additionally, the melee for all Ballistic shields is being revamped. This is to change the previous Shield melee priority and range, which caused confusing interactions. Defenders were recipients of inconsistent melee interactions when their hits wouldn't register even after full animations.
Therefore, the following shield nerfs in Rainbow Six Siege are coming with Y9S4:
- Melee damage was decreased to zero (from 65).
- Guard break intensity from a melee strike remains constant.
- Melee priority: If the opponent's melee hits first, the shield melee is canceled.
- Melee range: Shield melee range is comparable to knife melee.
- Consecutive guard breaks enhance the ferocity of each melee strike, making the Shield Operator increasingly vulnerable.

Lastly, the consecutive guard break affects Montagne the most since he is the Shield Operator who provides the best protection to himself in the extended state. As such, consecutive melee hits with increasing guard break ferocity made it so that a single Defender could counter him all alone with his Le Roc.
To balance this out, R6 Devs have incorporated the following change only for Montagne:
- Guard break animation strength when meleed is reduced to 20% (from 40%).
This tweak ensures that the Ballistic shield is primarily used as a supportive gadget that assists the team with intel.
