Fortnite News: Australian Open is hosting a half million dollar tournament

Fortnite will be hosting a tournament worth $500,000 (Australian Dollars) in the Australian Open that is currently ongoing. The tournament, called Fortnite Summer Smash is being co-organised with Epic Games and ESL along with the Australian Open Organizers.

Fortnite has a cult following all over the world and Epic has recently crossed the $3 billion mark in valuation. It has garnered a lot of popularity and has become one of the most profitable games and interactive esports. It has also gathered a liking among many other celebrities due to the simple nature of the game.

Fortnite Summer Smash will be open to the first 500 people over the age of 16 who apply. The event will spread across two days. The first, qualifying event will be held on Saturday, January 26 right before the women's single tennis final. The finalist will battle it out on the next day, Sunday, January 27. The venue is in Margaret Court Arena.

The tournament winner will take home a whopping $100,000. All players who have entered the final will get a prize regardless. The rest of the rewards are below, with the bottom 100 guaranteed to get $1000.

  • 4th-6th place      $25,000
  • 7th-10th place      $5,000
  • 11th-15th place   $3,000
  • 16th-20th place   $2,000
  • 21st-100th place   $1,000

There will also be an event after with popular Twitch streamers and YouTube stars Loserfruit, Lachlan, Muselk, Lazarbeam and MrFreshAsian participating in a Duos tournament to donate to a charity of their choice. There will also be some Tennis stars playing alongside them.

The registration link is not yet open, but details about entry as well as purchasing of tickets can be found in the Australian Open Page. Only Australian and New Zealand citizens above the age of 16 are eligible to apply. Ticket prices to spectate the game are $5 for kids and $49 for adults.
