How to beat Boss Troll in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake

Once you’ve claimed Ra’s Mirror in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, you can tackle the Boss Troll! You may notice that the king of Manoza speaks quite peculiarly compared to the rest of his kingdom, and that’s an important clue. After sneaking into his bedroom at night, and using the mirror, he’ll reveal himself as the mighty, but slow-witted Boss Troll. While this boss was a real nightmare in the original game, he doesn’t seem as tough this time around.

It also depends on when you choose to tackle this boss - this was a later check for me, compared to some of the others. He drops an important item, so Boss Troll is a must-fight in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. If you want to know how to deal with him, we’re here to help.

Tips to defeat Boss Troll in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake

I fought Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake’s Boss Troll with the Hero, Monster Wrangler, Pilgrim, and Sage. The Monster Wrangler is formerly a Soldier, and the Sage was a Wizard. While he’s nowhere near as devastating as the Chiromancer boss is, he can still hit very hard if you aren’t prepared.

Boss Troll, like most bosses, has a chance to attack twice, and he can easily compound both of his powerful strikes to deal anywhere from 160-200 damage to one party member. Even your well-geared Hero can’t just shrug off that kind of damage. Make sure to get Kabuff out early, and Oomph your Monster Wrangler/physical damage dealer.

This is especially important in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake because Boss Troll likes to use Kasap to weaken your whole party. This makes it so much easier for him to pound people with his giant club.

He may Kasap back-to-back rounds, so you may want to use Kabuff pretty regularly, just to prevent your defenses from going too low. For dealing damage, I use either melee strikes on Monster Wrangler for nearly 200 damage a strike, or his monster-summoning powers. These hit multiple times, and the more friendly monsters you have, it can start dealing some serious damage.

That all depends on how much effort you’ve put into finding Friendly Monsters for the Monster Arena, and if you’ve leveled up enough for Wild Side, which lets you take two actions a turn. If you have that, definitely use it. If you get a chance to use offensive spells, he is weak to Ice.

Beware his Attack Attacker skill as well, which strikes and reduces your defenses as well. The other dangerous attack is a Desperate Attack, which is an enemy crit. This can hit for well over 200 damage, which is, at this point in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, devastating, especially from Boss Troll.

I realized all too late that the Monster Wrangler is incredibly overpowered, so I don’t recommend only using it for melee. Boss Troll’s only other noteworthy attack is the Fuddle spell, which casts confusion - this can be incredibly dangerous, so make sure to cure it at once.

I recommend trying Wilde Side + Monster Pile-on at least once to see what the damage is. If it isn’t high enough, Wild Side+Melee will still serve you well with Oomph active. I had the Hero focus on Falcon Strike, and then healing when necessary and kept the Pilgrim focused on healing, and the occasional Kaswoosh when not healing/buffing.

My Sage also did a lot of buffing, and only cast Kacrackle when nothing else was needed. Thankfully, the Boss Troll doesn’t have any other skills of note in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, so just keep your health topped off, don’t let your defenses fall too far, and stomp out this threat to Manoza’s safety. Success will grant you the Mod Rod as a reward, which you can use for a few things in this JRPG remake.
