How to produce Silage in Farming Simulator 25

Silage in Farming Simulator 25 is a vital source for boosting your farm's productivity. It is a fermented feed produced from crops like grass or chaff, significant in feeding most animals, especially cows. It is not only used as fodder for feeding animals but can also be sold at a much more excellent price than raw crops.

This guide will provide detailed steps to efficiently produce silage in FS25 using grass, corn, or other crops, helping you make the most of this essential resource.

How do you produce Silage in Farming Simulator 25?

Why do you need silage in Farming Simulator 25?

In FS25, silage is mainly fed to animals, specifically cattle. It forms a constituent of Total Mixed Ration (TMR), which is considered to be the most excellent feed for your cow. You can also sell silage at a biogas plant or an animal dealer for a profit that is typically four times what you paid for the crops used to make the silage.

Whether you are running a livestock business or simply need some additional income, silage in Farming Simulator 25 is the lifeblood that can further improve farm performance.

To convert the crops (oats, corn, barley, sorghum, sunflowers, soybeans, wheat) into silage, you must harvest them correctly, mainly employing a forage harvester. This equipment helps you gather chaff, which is key for the production of silage. It is important to harvest the crops before they reach their final growth stage (except for grass) to get excellent results.

How to produce silage in Farming Simulator 25: Methods explained

In FS25, there are different ways of making silage: each has unique demands in terms of tools and procedure. Below, we outline the two common methods for producing silage.

Method 1: Producing silage in Farming Simulator 25 from grass (Without a bunker silo)

You can make silage from grass without a bunker silo, but you will need the following equipment:

  • Tractor with front loader for tool attachments.
  • Mower to cut the grass.
  • Windrower to arrange grass into rows.
  • Baler to bundle grass into bales.
  • Bale wrapper to wrap bales and start the fermentation process.
  • Bale spike to shift bales.

Steps

  1. Mow the grass: Start the process by mowing grass in your field. This can be done using a mower.
  2. Windrow the grass: Subsequently, windrowing involves arranging the grass neatly into rows to get it ready for baling. This is done using a windrower.
  3. Bale the grass: Use the baler to turn the windrowed grass into bales.
  4. Wrap bales: After bales have been formed, begin wrapping them with a bale wrapper to initiate fermentation.
  5. Wait for fermentation: Once the bales are tied, they start fermenting. While this takes time, after the fermentation process, you are all set with silage bales that can be sold or used straight away.

Method 2: Producing silage in Farming Simulator 25 from chaff and using a bunker silo

For a larger operation, you can produce silage using a bunker silo and convert crops such as corn into chaff. Here's what you'll need:

  • Tractor with front loader (for tool attachment).
  • Leveler (for spreading material evenly)
  • Compactor used for better compression (optional).
  • Forage harvester (with a silage header and silage additive, in case you want to increase the yield)
  • Bunker silo for fermentation.
  • Shovel or silage cutter, which will be used in removing silage from the silo.

Steps

  1. Harvest the chaff: Cut crops such as maize, wheat, and oats using a forage harvester. Crops other than grass should be cut just before their final stage of growth. Supplement your harvester with silage additive to increase your yield.
  2. Unload into the bunker silo: Pour all the chaff or grass into your bunker silo. Distribute it evenly without letting it spill over.
  3. Compress the material: Use a heavy-duty tractor with a leveler to compact the chaff. For better compacting, attach a silage compactor at the back of the tractor.
  4. Cover the silo: Once compressed to 100%, cover the silo to commence the fermentation process.
  5. Silage: Extract the silage after the fermentation process is over. You can now open the silo and remove the silage by a shovel or by using a silage cutter. Load it into the trailer, transport it, sell it, or use it to make TMR for your cows.

Helpful tips for the production of silage in Farming Simulator 25

  • Use silage additive: Adding a silage additive to your forage harvester can increase your yield, making the silage process more profitable.
  • Grass is the best option: Grass is probably the most efficient crop to use if the goal is maximum output over time. Also, two-month harvesting intervals ensure a regular supply of grass, whereas corn takes so much longer to reach the same stage of maturity.
  • Bunker silos are handy for bulk production: If you want to produce a lot of silage at once, use a bunker silo. That said, you will require a forage harvester and a good tractor to handle it.
  • Timing is everything: Make sure you’re harvesting your crops at the right time. For corn and other crops, harvest them before they reach full maturity for the best results.
