Subnautica 2 announced at Xbox Partner Preview 2024

Surprising many fans out of the blue, Subnautica 2 has been confirmed to be in development. Based on the announcement at the recent Xbox Partner Preview showcase, fans can return to (developer) Unknown World Entertainment's beloved alien underwater planets in 2025 via early access. This makes it the third entry in the series since the franchise first launched in 2018.

This comes after a long two-year wait since the studio stated they have plans for another Subnautica game. While not much else is known at the moment, fans can expect more news to come as the development of the game progresses further. Read on to find out all confirmed thus far.

What platforms is Subnautica 2 coming out on?

As per the new trailer, the sequel is confirmed to be arriving on Xbox Series X|S and PC platforms via early access, meaning it will be developed with community feedback in mind, just like past entries. Additionally, it will also be available on Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft's popular game catalog service. This way, fans who own an active subscription need not buy the game as they can play it on day one of launch.

However, there has been no word of a version of Subnautica 2 for other platforms such as PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch (or its next-gen successor that is yet to launch). Besides the cinematic trailer showcasing the two divers facing a threat in the twilight depths, not much else was shown. So, fans who want more must wait until the developers divulge further details.

That said, this will likely be another first-person open-world survival game like its two predecessors. Fans intrigued by the trailer can check out the other games of the franchise - Subnautica and Subnautica Below Zero - both of which are available on all modern platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
