Should you play Dragon Age Inquisition before The Veilguard?
BioWare is set to continue Dragon Age Inquisition's story in the upcoming, The Veilguard, so you might wonder if playing the third game is necessary. Despite the story starting from the aftermath of Inquisition's Trespasser DLC storyline, BioWare has confirmed that you don't need to play the third game to understand the plot of Dragon Age The Veilguard.
The developers have stated that The Veilguard will be accessible to both new fans and old ones. Given the game will be a direct sequel to Dragon Age Inquisition, let's take a look at everything that you need to know before jumping back into the world of Thedas.
All connecting plot points between Dragon Age Inquisition and The Veilguard
It is known that Veilguard's story will take place 10 years after the events of the Dragon Age Inquisition in the northern part of Thedas. That said, unlike the previous games, the storyline that spanned from Inquisition's Trespasser DLC will heavily come into play in Veilguard.
Given below are all the connecting plot points between the two games.
Fen'Harel, the Dreadwolf
Inquisition's Trespasser DLC shed light on the motives of one of the party members and a potential love interest in the game. Towards the concluding moments of the DLC, the elven mage, Solas revealed himself as Fen'Harel or the Dreadwolf.
He wants to tear down the Veil, a barrier that separates the realm of Thedas from the Fade, a dimension full of chaotic beings, and try to restore his civilization back to its former glory.
During the gameplay reveal of Dragon Age The Veilguard, BioWare showcased a few moments from the prologue part of the campaign. Solas succeeds in creating a rift in the Veil, but Rook's interference seemingly causes him to be trapped in the Fade.
Returning characters
The Dragon Age games always had a few returning characters who appeared in each title. Veilguard will also have many familiar faces from older games returning to play some role or another.
Here is the list of known characters who will make an appearance in the upcoming RPG:
- The Inquisitor, protagonist of Dragon Age Inquisition
- The witch Morrigan
- Lace Harding, a dwarven scout and a member of the Inquisition faction from the previous game
- Varric Tethras
- Solas, also known as Fen'Harel or the Dreadwolf.
The game's creative director, John Epler, has stated that you will not need to play the older games as The Veilguard will have enough references that will allow you to connect the dots from Dragon Age Inquisition
