2024 F1 Mexican GP: Driver Ratings

The F1 Mexican GP was an interesting race with quite a few storylines emerging from the weekend. What also stood out during the weekend was how quite a few drivers rose while others struggled.

The unique challenge posed by the slightly less grip track surface, exacerbated by the lack of running, meant that drivers had to be very careful. While a few drivers nailed everything this weekend, others struggled. Who fits into which category? Let's take a look as we rate the drivers for the 2024 F1 Mexican GP.

Criteria

  • Performance in both qualifying and races is judged.
  • Results achieved compared to the potential of the car.
  • Mistakes made over the weekend.
  • Relative performance against their teammate.

2024 F1 Mexican GP: Rating the drivers

Red Bull

Max Verstappen

Rating: 6

Looking back, Max Verstappen might think that the race could have been executed better. The two penalties were unnecessary as he goes home after a P6 at the F1 Mexican GP.

Sergio Perez

Rating: 4

Sergio Perez might not be in the best of moods after the race in Mexico. He could have done better this weekend, but as it turns out, contact with Liam and poor qualifying meant a poor outing for the Red Bull driver.

Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton

Rating: 7.5

A decent outcome overall for Lewis Hamilton. He might have been slightly slower than the two Mercedes drivers and lost the position to George early on. He made the most of Russell's broken front wing to secure a P5, which would be a confidence booster of sorts for the driver.

George Russell

Rating: 7.5

A standard George Russell weekend at the F1 Mexican GP. The Mercedes driver would be a bit disappointed about losing the position to Lewis, although that might be because of the broken front wing.

Ferrari

Charles Leclerc

Rating: 8

Charles Leclerc was a bit compromised due to a lack of practice time for him to sort out the setup. The impact was evident in qualifying and the race. P3 was the best he could have done, but he certainly won't be happy about that.

Carlos Sainz

Rating: 10

It's just one of those days when Carlos Sainz nails everything. He's a brilliant driver, and he showed just that in Mexico when he picked up his second win of the season.

McLaren

Lando Norris

Rating: 8.5

Overall, Lando Norris would be happy with how the F1 Mexican GP went. The McLaren driver finally got one over Verstappen, and to add to it the P2 finish was a great result for the driver.

Oscar Piastri

Rating: 5

Oscar Piastri had a poor race once again, and this is going to raise questions about how well he is performing in general. Considering a title is on the line, he will have to bring his best every time.

Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso

Rating: 6

A weekend to forget for Fernando Alonso as the Aston Martin continues to take big steps in the wrong direction. This is just not how the team needs to perform, and the Spaniard is hoping against hope that Newey can come in and perform some miracle with the squad.

Lance Stroll

Rating: 6

A decent overall weekend for the Canadian. Maybe a P10 was on the table, and he just didn't have the performance to put together a spirited challenge.

Alpine

Pierre Gasly

Rating: 8

A good race weekend for Pierre Gasly as he secured a point for the French team at the F1 Mexican GP.

Esteban Ocon

Rating: 5

A weekend to forget for the French driver, as he just struggled to put the car in the right window all weekend.

Williams

Alex Albon

Rating: 6

A crash-filled weekend where a potential points finish went up in smoke for the Thai driver.

Franco Colapinto

Rating: 6

A poor qualifying and a decent race for the Argentinian. He would be hoping for a better run at the F1 Brazilian GP

V-Ca-RB

Liam Lawson

Rating: 7

Liam Lawson is doing a bloody good job making enemies of half the grid with his tactics. The driver angered Alonso in Austin, and he chose the F1 Mexican GP to anger Perez and Colapinto. He's got the performance, but how much? Red Bull is desperately trying to find and answer to this.

Yuki Tsunoda

Rating: 6

A weekend to forget for the Japanese driver. Two crashes, one his fault and the other wasn't, but that's just how things sort themselves out most of the time.

Stake F1 Sauber

Valtteri Bottas

Rating: 7

A very strong weekend for Valtteri Bottas at the F1 Mexican GP. The Finnish driver continues to upstage Zhou Guanyu even though that has done nothing in terms of improving his prospects of remaining in the sport.

Guanyu Zhou

Rating: 4

Another disappointing run for the Chinese driver as he gets closer to the end of his F1 career.

Haas F1

Kevin Magnussen

Rating: 10

A performance that served as a reminder of how good Kevin Magnussen can be but often isn't.

The later stages of the F1 Mexican GP had the Haas driver catching Verstappen ahead and gapping Piastri behind. Magnussen's best weekend of the season by far.

Nico Hulkenberg

Rating: 7.5

A decent weekend for Nico Hulkenberg, but he was invariably upstaged by a stunning F1 Mexican GP performance by his teammate.
