5 worst F1 drivers of the 2024 season feat. Sergio Perez

The 2024 F1 season was arguably one of the closest in terms of competition between the drivers and the teams. We had the constructors title battle being decided in the last race of the season between McLaren and Ferrari.

With that being said, in a season that is this long and has so many triple headers with not as many breaks in between as other seasons, the demand is that the driver doesn't go through a bad run. The ones who do end up finding it hard to dig themselves out of trouble.

This was precisely what happened with a lot of drivers on the grid, where one or two issues with the car got dragged on until the end of the season. There were a few drivers who simply struggled to make a mark this season. In this feature, let's take a look at the 5 worst F1 drivers this season.

Methodology

  • Calculate the average of driver ratings given to each driver after every race over the 24-race period.
  • Rank the drivers accordingly, with the higher rating yielding a better rank.

Who were the worst performers of the 2024 F1 season?

#5 Valtteri Bottas (Avg rating: 6.06)

At no. 5 we have Valtteri Bottas. The Finnish driver might just have competed in his last race in F1 in Abu Dhabi this season. The driver was quite clearly a step above his teammate Zhou Guanyu if we look at the entire season.

With that being said, while Sauber was probably not the best car to showcase what a driver can do in F1, there were quite clearly some moments where maybe a points-finish could have been possible, but Bottas missed the opportunity with a bad start. In the end, he finds himself 5th in our rankings.

#4 Lance Stroll (Avg rating: 5.56)

At #4 we have Lance Stroll. The Canadian's place at Aston Martin is a bone of contention for every F1 fan who watches the sport. The driver has just not performed at the level that warrants a slot in a team that could potentially one day be a grid beater.

Just like every season in his career, Stroll has a few high points here and there this season, but overall this season once again saw him struggle to keep up with Fernando Alonso.

#3 Sergio Perez (Avg rating: 5.52)

At no. 3 we have Sergio Perez. The Mexican, in terms of his caliber, is not as bad a driver as he's performed this season, and a large part of it has to do with the fact that the driver was unable to make the most of the car under him.

Red Bull is tricky machinery for sure, but when your teammate is winning races and you're not even fighting for podiums, it's not a good look. We don't know what the future holds for Perez at this stage, but it wouldn't be a surprise if the driver has already raced for the last time in F1.

#2 Zhou Guanyu (Avg rating: 5.52)

At no. 2 we have Zhou Guanyu. The Chinese driver is also one who has arguably raced for the last time in F1, as he ended his career with points in the last season as well.

The kind of progress and growth one expects from a driver was always missing from Zhou in his last year with the team and even though he brings with him a ton of sponsorship money, it's not enough to keep the ball rolling when the performances are just not good enough.

#1 Logan Sargeant (Avg rating: 5.36)

If your F1 team is willing to replace you mid-season and the rookie driver that replaces you performs in a manner that you're not missed, it says a lot about the contribution you were making to the team.

Logan Sargeant was the worst F1 driver of the 2024 season, as the American just could not get to grips with the car and perform at a satisfactory level. It is astounding how a driver who had been so bright in his junior career couldn't make it in the big leagues. Logan was dropped with 8 races left in the season and it's safe to say that the driver didn't have the performances to keep his seat safe for the long haul.
