F1 Penalty Points: Drivers' penalty points after the Abu Dhabi GP
The F1 penalty points system was introduced to keep the driving standards above a threshold. As part of this system, drivers are penalized for the transgressions they make on the track. These transgressions could include causing a collision, dangerous driving, etc.
The number of points for a transgression depends on its severity. These points stay with the driver for a period of 12 months before expiry. If a driver ends up accruing more than 12 F1 penalty points over a 12-month period, they are banned for one race.
So far, only one driver has ever crossed the 12 F1 penalty points threshold. It happened this season when Kevin Magnussen became the first scalp and had to sit out of the race in Baku. As the season comes to an end at Abu Dhabi, where do the drivers stand in terms of penalty points? Let's take a look.
