F1 Penalty Points: Top 10 most penalized drivers of all time

The F1 penalty point system was introduced in 2014 as drivers were punished for their on-track infringements. The FIA gave time penalties for the infringements during the races, while also adding some points on the drivers' super licenses based on the severity of the respective incidents.

It has become a common practice for the race stewards to dish out penalty points to a driver's super license which has a year-long expiration date. A total of 12 points in a single year could see a driver getting banned from a race. Below is the list of ten F1 drivers who have amassed the most amount of points since 2014:

#1 Red Bull F1's Max Verstappen- 39 points

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen is the most penalized driver of all time, given he has amassed 39 points since 2014 on his super license. The three-time world champion made his debut in the pinnacle of motorsport in 2015 and quickly built a reputation for himself for being a no-holds-barred driver.

His ruthless driving style has earned him seven points in the 2024 season, with two of his penalty points expiring in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks.

#2 Sergio Perez- 36 points

Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez finds himself second on the list with 36 penalty points. The Mexican has claimed 7 points in three separate seasons, 2018, 2021, and 2023, and is known for his aggressive driving style on the track.

The six-time race winner will have an opportunity to relinquish two points at the end of November which would see him with one penalty point on his license.

#3 Kevin Magnussen- 36 points

The Dane has earned himself a reputation for being a menace on the track, given that he never backs down in a wheel-to-wheel battle. The 32-year-old became the first driver since his former Haas F1 teammate Romain Grosjean to get a race ban to his name in Monza this year.

The 2014 Australian GP podium sitter had amassed 12 points up until the Italian GP and had to sit out the race in Baku. However, heading into the possible final three races of his career, Magnussen has a clean slate in terms of penalty points.
