"For someone who says never give up, Lewis Hamilton sure as hell gives up pretty easily": Fans react to driver's comments about team radio in Brazil
F1 fans recently reacted to Lewis Hamilton's explanation of his downbeat radio message after the 2024 F1 Brazilian GP. The seven-time world champion openly admitted that he was not keen on coming back to racing this season after a poor performance at Interlagos.
In Brazil, the Mercedes star was nowhere near the top grid spots in sprint and also in Sunday's Grand Prix. In the sprint, he managed to finish P11, and in qualifying, he was knocked out in Q1 itself. In the main races, he managed to score a single point by finishing P10.
Since Brazil and its race weekend have always been near and dear to Hamilton, he was extremely downbeat. After the race, he gave a sorrowful radio message, hinting that this was his last race of the season, even though the calendar had three more to go.
Coming to the Las Vegas GP, Lewis Hamilton explained what he felt after the Brazilian GP and his radio message. Speaking to the media, he said (via GPBlog):
"I mean, in the moment that's how I felt, like I didn't really want to come back after that weekend. But I think that's only natural. It's frustrating when you have a season like this, which I'm pretty sure I won't have again, or at least I'll work towards not having again."
Naturally, in the moment I didn’t feel great, obviously with that last race. Heat of the moment, sure – I’d much rather be on the beach, chilling. I don’t need to do this. But I’m here, and I love this job still. I’m here to absolutely give it my all these last few races, and finish out strong, and that was always the plan," he added.
Some F1 fans were unimpressed with how Lewis Hamilton managed a dull Brazilian GP and an overall tough season. They criticized him for giving up so easily and talked about how people do their jobs.
"This pissed me off bro, like i don't want to go to uni, i don't want to work, i do it cuz i have to and i don't get paid millions, just stfu and drive man like f**k off, Spain 2022 type of s**t, for someone who says never give up, he sure as hell gives up pretty easily," one fan wrote.
"Weak mentality," another added.
On the other hand, some fans criticized Mercedes for not creating a powerful car in the last three years to allow Lewis Hamilton to perform.
"Gave them 3 years to develop a competitive car after 2021 and still can’t get the job done," one follower wrote.
"I don’t blame him. 3 years of experiments is enough for any driver. Use George for the extreme sets ups and experiments these last 3 races. Way to send Hamilton out on a high, Toto," someone chimed in.
Lewis Hamilton's sorrowful radio message in the Brazilian GP
Lewis Hamilton spoke sorrowfully about his poor performance after the 2024 F1 Brazilian GP, hinting that this could be his last race of the season with Mercedes. Speaking on the radio after the race, he initially said how poor the entire race weekend was and criticized the car. Nonetheless, he thanked the team and hinted that if this was his last race with Mercedes, he regretted that the result was so bad.
"That was a disaster of a weekend guys. That's the worst the car has ever been, but thank you for continuing to try. Great job to all the guys at the pitstop. If this is the last time that I get to perform, it's a shame it wasn't great, but grateful for you," Hamilton said.
Lewis Hamilton is in seventh place in the drivers' championship table with 190 points.
