"If you knew I was born here in America" - When Will Power playfully set the record straight on IndyCar fan favorites
Will Power has been racing in IndyCar for close to two decades and has become a fan favorite. The fans love the Penske driver for his humor and the Aussie accent.
The Australian was featured in Team Penske's YouTube video uploaded in 2019 where he answered the most searched Google queries about him. While doing so, the Aussie set the record straight about his accent.
The question was "Is Will Power's accent real?”. The Penske driver sarcastically replied:
“No it's not. If you guys knew, I was actually born, (then laughs a little and changes his accent), here in America. I like burgers and fries. I love hanging out with the guys at the bar.”
Power then answered the question:
“Yeah, my accent is as real as Aussie as they come.” (at 0:36)
Power was born in Queensland, Australia, and grew up in the land Down Under. He raced in the Australian Formula Ford championship until the early 2000s before making it to the European F3 championship and finally IndyCar in 2005.
Power then answered a few other top queries. The one that stood out was “Has Will Power ever boxed a Kangaroo?”. The Aussie again took the sarcastic approach to answering the question, suggesting that it was a completely normal thing to box kangaroos in Australia. He continued explaining how they are tough to beat, and people usually end up with scratches and bruises.
The final question in the video gave Will Power a great idea to play a prank on his Penske teammates.
“I really think it'll be a great prank”: When a Google query gives Will Power a prank idea
The final query Will Power answered in the above video was whether the Aussie eats vegemite. The Penske driver replied that he doesn't eat vegemite, and then a prank idea struck his mind.
Vegemite is an Aussie food spread made from the yeast extract left after brewing beer. Spices, vegetables, and other flavors are added to this extract to create vegemite.
Explaining the prank, Will Power said:
“I love vegemite. I really think a great prank would be to put a bunch of vegemite in a Nutella bottle. Get Josef (Newgarden) or Simon (Pagenaud) to taste it. I'd say, ‘Taste this Nutella, it is phenomenal. It's a new brand and they've added new ingredients.’ That would be good, wouldn't it?” (reference 1:40)
Vegemite, just like marmite, has a distinct taste. People either love it or hate it.
