Lewis Hamilton follows the England Football Team on social media before the Euro final, and unfollows after the team loses
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has unfollowed the England Football Team on his social media platform after the latter lost in the Euro final against Spain on Sunday, July 14. The England Football Team nicknamed 'The Three Lions' lost the championship final 2-1 to the Spanish National Team, who claimed a record fourth title at the Euros.
There was a lot of expectation from the team as they had reached the Euro final for the second consecutive time under the management of Gareth Southgate. But they were unable to find a response to a late winner from Spanish forward Mikel Oyarzabal in the 86th minute after the English had equalized from a Cole Palmer wondergoal.
Like everyone in the country, Lewis Hamilton too was closely following the championships as the England Football Team was bidding to bring the cup home after losing the Euro 2020 final to Italy. He even followed them on Instagram ahead of the final on Sunday but later unfollowed them to bring his 'Following' tally back to 5.
However, the 39-year-old Brit did leave a motivational message in the comments section on the official page of the England Football Team before unfollowing them. He wrote:
"So proud of you all, never gave up and that's all that matters."
Lewis Hamilton speaks about the England Football Team and the pressure of representing the country
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton stated that he could not imagine the pressure of an entire nation on the shoulders of the young players on the field.
Speaking with CNN, the seven-time world champion said (via Eurosport):
“I remember being young and thrown into the spotlight. I can’t imagine [what] it is like for those guys that are on the pitch. The pressure from the whole country is weighing on you. It is tough.
“I’m really, really proud of our team with all the difficulties that they’ve experienced, and they’ve faced time and time again, just continuing to get up and have the resilience. I think it’s just been really impressive.”
Before the final, Lewis Hamilton was asked about his expectations from the team for the tournament:
“I try not to get too amped up! You know how England always is with the World Cup. I don’t want to apply too much pressure. We’ve just got such a talented pool of players. We just need them to be in synergy.”
It has been 58 years since England's win in the FIFA World Cup in 1966 but ever since they have failed to win any other trophy despite having many golden generations of talented players.
However, the nation has had better luck in F1, with Hamilton still remaining a top driver as was evident from his most recent win the British GP last weekend.
