Lewis Hamilton spotted at the Paris Olympics supporting his friend Miles Chamley-Watson
Lewis Hamilton was recently spotted in Paris to support his friend, Miles Chamley-Watson, in the ongoing Paris Olympics. The Mercedes driver is a long-time friend of Chamley-Watson, and the former's presence in the French capital was not surprising.
Chamley-Watson is a British-American right-handed foil fencer, who is competing at the Grand Palais in Paris. He is a three-time Olympian and the 2016 Team Olympic bronze medalist. The 34-year-old and Team USA (Gerek Meinhardt, Nick Itkin, Alexander Massialas) are set to take on host France for the bronze medal on Sunday. The team fell short in the semifinals, losing to Italy by a score of 45-38.
Hamilton's friendship with Chamley-Watson is well-documented. They've been open about their bond, sharing adventures like dressing as Mario characters in Japan, sunbathing in Australia, and yachting around Europe.
In an interview with Olympic.com, Chamley-Watson discussed their friendship.
"We love taking trips together. I think that's what helps me in my sports life is keeping my mind free in the off-season," he said.
Here's what the the seven-time F1 world champion had to say about Chamley-Watson:
"So, I have a really good friend, Miles Chamley-Watson, who’s competing in fencing. We’ve been supporting each other all the time, and we talk pretty much every day. So, I know how hard he’s been working, and I would love to be with him on that."
Hamilton is currently enjoying his summer break after a controversial win at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. He inherited the victory when teammate George Russell was disqualified due to a technical infringement, marking Hamilton's second win of the season.
Lewis Hamilton hinted at a potential Olympic appearance
Lewis Hamilton recently hinted at a possible Olympic future. Having achieved everything possible in Formula 1, he mentioned considering other sports. However, the seriousness of his Olympic aspirations remains unclear
Speaking about this, he said,
"No, I'm not good enough to be in the Olympics [with surfing or fencing] but maybe I'll do an Olympic sport one day."
As things stand, Lewis Hamilton is tied with Formula 1 for at least three years from now. The Mercedes ace signed a multi-year deal with Ferrari starting in 2025, securing his presence in the sport for the next three years.
That could make it possible for him to participate in the Summer Olympics in 2028. However, with the Olympics still four years away, the focus for Hamilton remains firmly on Formula 1. Currently positioned sixth in the Drivers' Championship, 127 points behind leader Max Verstappen, the seven-time champion has his work cut out for him this season.
