Max Verstappen pulls back the curtain on dealing with the public dispute involving Jos Verstappen and Christian Horner

Max Verstappen has pulled back the curtain on how he dealt with the situation of his father Jos Verstappen and Red Bull team principal Christian Horner being at loggerheads against each other early in the year. The driver points out that the most important thing for him was that there was a clear channel of communication and a working relationship was maintained.

The start of the season was a tumultuous time for the team internally when it came to the politics of it. According to reports, Horner was being investigated for inappropriate behavior with his colleague, and at the same time, Jos led calls to get the team boss to leave the squad.

While this happened at the start of the season, it continued throughout with Jos Verstappen often using media outlets to make critical remarks about Red Bull whenever key personnel left the team. First, it was Adrian Newey, then when the same happened with Jonathan Wheatley as well, Max Verstappen's father was quite vocal in the media.

Talking to BBC, Max Verstappen opened up on how he dealt with the situation as he said,

"People do not need to be best friends, they don’t need to go on holiday together. But I feel like you can have a normal working relationship, which I feel is the case absolutely, and especially lately it is going much better. But I always said as well, when you have problems with each other, you’re not happy with something, you talk, you communicate, right?"

He further added,

"You speak to each other and that’s always way better than throwing something in the media. And I have said that to both of them and that’s why it was not for me about picking a side. It was just speaking a bit of common sense, I think, to both of them."

Very important to have a good relationship with both Christian and my dad: Max Verstappen

Expanding on it, Max Verstappen felt that at the time it was very important for him to have a good relationship with both his father and his boss Christian Horner.

The driver also hinted that while at the start of the season, there were a few questions that Jos had about the team. In recent times he has come around and is able to see a better environment. He said,

"What has always been very important is that I had a good relationship with Christian and my dad. My dad of course thinks about me and has the best interests for me - what I want to do and how I am in the team."

He added,

"He of course had his questions but at the same time I was always very busy dealing with the performance of the car and trying to make that better. But at the end of the day, he could see that now everyone is normal, everyone is dealing with it and focusing on the performance side of things."

As Max Verstappen edges closer to his 4th title, it would be interesting to see how the Dutch driver sees the future at Red Bull, a team that is currently not the one with the best car on the grid.
