"OMG It's going DOWN, I can't wait" - Tennis legend Serena Williams reacts to Lewis Hamilton being made co-chair for 2025 Met Gala
Tennis legend Serena Williams expressed her excitement at the news that Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton will be co-chair of the 2025 Met Gala. The Mercedes driver will share responsibilities with Pharell Williams, Colmon Domingo, and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, with NBA legend LeBron James serving as honorary chair.
The seven-time F1 world champion and the tennis icon have shared a long-lasting friendship and have been supportive of each other's careers on and off the track for many years. The American has been spotted in the F1 paddock on several occasions in places like Miami, Austin, and Monaco, extending her support to Hamilton.
Williams did the same recently on social media after Hamilton was selected to co-chair the Met Gala 2025, which is themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." She commented on Hamilton's post announcing the news,
"OMG It's going DOWN, I can't wait."
Lewis Hamilton on his Instagram account had earlier shared the news and said what it meant to him. He wrote,
"I’m beyond honored to be one of the co-chairs for next year’s Met Gala, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. This theme speaks to me deeply. When I started my career I never imagined what I might be capable of beyond my sport. The pressure to conform holds so many people back. Growing up as the only Black kid on the track, so often that pressure got to me.
"Expressing myself creatively was and still is my freedom from that conformity. For Black people across the diaspora, fashion is self-preservation. Fashion is resilience, and I can’t wait to further explore and amplify our underrepresented voices. Thank you to the @metcostumeinstitute for the platform to uplift Black creatives on this scale."
When Lewis Hamilton spoke about his friendship with Serena Williams
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton once shared that he has confided in Serena Williams over the years as it was "lonely at the top." He said he talked to the American about the challenges and struggles of being an elite athlete.
Speaking in May last year, the 39-year-old said (via People),
"It can be quite a lonely experience being at the top of your sport. So, to be able to confide in other individuals who have experienced something similar. Serena and I — we talk a lot about sports and competition, and when we talk to each other about the struggles or the successes, only us in our little bubble can understand."
"When you're talking to Serena, you're like — yeah, I know Williams, I know what you're talking about. So, it's pretty unique and a privilege to have those conversations."
Serena Williams previously said she believed that the Mercedes driver "should have had nine" championship wins, rather than the seven he has.
