Reports: Franco Colapinto and Alex Albon cost Williams damage worth $2.46M due to crashes in the F1 Brazilian GP
Williams faced significant financial losses due to three major crashes during the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The combined estimated cost of the crashes caused by Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto is approximately $2.46 million (€2.3 million).
Brazil hosted the 2024 Sao Paulo GP at Interlagos, the 21st race of the season. The entire race weekend was rain-drenched as multiple red flags hindered the smooth conduct, both in qualifying and the race.
Max Verstappen delivered a masterclass, recovering from a starting position of 17th to claim victory. This marked his first win since the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix. On the other hand, Williams' season-long rival Alpine registered two podium finishes through Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly.
Williams suffered their first crash in the qualifying when Albon lost control of his FW46 and hit the barrier. His car sustained severe damages and, as a result, it was deemed unfit for the race. Colapinto, on the other hand, sustained two crashes — one in the qualifying, the other during the race.
Formu1a.uno recently shared a post on X, where they revealed the estimated cost of the crashes. For Albon, the cost reached €800,000, which roughly comes to $857,000. Meanwhile, Colapinto's crashes are set to cost Williams double the money. Reports estimate €1,500,000 which comes to around $1,600,000.
Following repeated crashes during the course of the season, Williams is facing severe budget constraints and a shortage of spare parts. The recent crashes at the Brazilian Grand Prix have added salt to their wounds.
Williams boss termed Brazilian GP crash as "lowest moments"
Following three back-to-back crashes in the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Williams boss James Vowles has stated that the entire ordeal was one of the lowest moments for him in Formula 1.
“The nature of Formula 1 is that you can have some of the most incredible feelings and results, as well as some of the lowest moments that you can feel within a sport,” Vowles told the media.
“I think it's fair to say this weekend is the second of those two. We've had three incredibly large crashes in just a few hours from one another and have a tremendous amount of work to get ourselves back on top of our spares situation before we go to Las Vegas in just a few weeks’ time," he added.
Williams F1 team currently occupies the ninth position in the Constructors' Championship with 17 points. Only Sauber is behind them in P10 with no points in their tally.
Maren continues to lead the championship with 593 points, followed by Ferrari with 557 points. Red Bull sits at P3 with 544 points after 21 races and five Sprints.
