“So proud of you all, never gave up and that's what matters": Lewis Hamilton's message to the England football team after Euro Cup loss
Lewis Hamilton praised England's National Football team for their efforts in the 2024 UEFA Euro final against Spain. England lost to Spain in the final 1-2.
The 2024 UEFA Euro final was a tense match. The first half of the match had no major action as both teams were evenly matched. However, one minute into the second half Spain scored the first goal of the match, putting them ahead of England. Nico Williams got free of the England defenders and managed to score for his team.
In the 73rd minute, England's Cole Palmer got a great pass from Jude Bellingham and managed to shoot a beautiful grounded shot inside the far goalpost, thus making the scoreline equal. After long periods of pressure put on by Spain, they were able to take the lead once again as Mikel Oyarzabal found the back of the net in the 86th minute. Oyarzabal's goal allowed Spain to clinch the Euro title in 2024.
After the match, England posted the full-time scoreline on their official Instagram account. Mercedes driver Hamilton was among the many celebrities to have commented on the post. He expressed pride for the football team and added that their attitude of not giving up mattered the most.
"So proud of you all, never gave up and that's what matters," Lewis Hamilton wrote.
Hamilton has expressed his support for England's football team in the past. After the British GP qualifying, both he and teammate George Russell watched the England vs Switzerland quarterfinal match together on Silverstone's main stage along with the fans on the stage's big screen. They also celebrated together when England won the match via a penalty shootout.
Lewis Hamilton shows support for England's football superstar by raising his voice against the British media
Lewis Hamilton recently re-shared a post that spoke out against the British media for 'vilifying' England's football player Bukayo Saka after the team's defeat against Iceland in a friendly match on June 7.
England lost the friendly to Iceland, conceding a goal in the 12th minute of the match. Saka, who stepped in as a substitute in the second half, was heavily featured in reports by major British media after the match. However, these reports were criticized by fans for focusing on the Arsenal FC player. Hamilton had reposted a post by Versus on his Instagram stories concerning the same. The original post had supported the 22-year-old superstar and had accused sections of the British media of 'scapegoating' him.
"We need to hold the English media accountable for systemically vilifying black players. The constant scapegoating of black players needs to stop. This endemic racial discrimination has no place in football, yet countless news outlets suggest otherwise..." Versus post read.
