10 best football quotes of 2017

Bristol City v Manchester United - Carabao Cup Quarter-Final
Mourinho's bitter statement is set to reverberate in England in the coming years

2017 was another terrific year for football as the sport and its players broke new territories. Real Madrid became the first team to defend the Champions League and Neymar left Barcelona to join Paris Saint-Germain among several other notable moments in a remarkable year.

There were several stunning title wins both at the club and country level with England in particular, winning tournaments across age groups. Now, depending on the nature of performances and success achieved, it is natural for footballing personalities to speak up. Some of the statements cause quite a stir while a few others remind us of the human aspect of football.

The year has seen quite a few quotes getting widespread attention for several reasons and let's have a look at ten of the best.

#10 United's spending is not enough

Jose Mourinho has always been known as the "Special One" but his luck has been on the wane in recent years. His interviews always used to something to watch for his wit and dry humour. They continue to be one to look for in the present scenario as well, with the only change coming in the form of the Portuguese appearing bitter than ever.

Case in point is his recent remarks on Manchester United's spending not being enough to match Pep Guardiola's Manchester City who sit a whopping 15 points ahead of their local rivals after 20 league games. This led to Mourinho retorting when the press asked him about the dropped points in recent games when he said:

"We are in the second year of trying to rebuild a football team that is not one of the best teams in the world. Manchester City buy full-backs for the price of strikers."

On being reminded about United's big spending on the likes of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and so on, the Portuguese said:

“It is not enough. And the price for the big clubs, the price for the big clubs is different from the other clubs."

As one would expect, this has caused quite a commotion across England and Europe as Mourinho himself has spent close to £260 million since he took over the United hot-seat. One can expect this quote to stay relevant in the coming year as well given Mourinho's rivalry with Guardiola and United's rivalry with City.
