2014 Federation Cup: Salgaocar FC beat Mumbai FC, stay in race for semifinal slot
Former champions Salgaocar FC edged past Mumbai FC with a 2-1 scoreline in their second group C encounter at the 35th Federation Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Saturday evening.
Australian Matthew Foschini gave the Goan outfit the lead which was cancelled out by N.P. Pradeep at the start of the second half before Gilbert Oliveira scored the winner for the Goans to secure three points for his side.
Matthew Foschini whipped in a gem of a free-kick to find the back of the net after Darryl Duffy had been fouled on the edge of the area.
Post the breather, N.P. Pradeep let loose a rasping shot from around the edge of the box which left Karanjit Singh in the Salgaocar goal with no chance as Mumbai FC scored the equaliser after Henry Ezeh laid it on the platter for Pradeep, but Gilbert Oliveira secured the win for Salgaocar’s.
Salgaocar FC now have three points from two matches and face Mohun Bagan in their final encounter while Mumbai FC are out of the competition as they are yet to open their account.
