2014 Federation Cup: Sporting Clube de Goa overcome East Bengal in 2-1 win
Beevan D’Mello scored his second goal of the tournament five minutes from the final whistle, to hand Sporting Clube de Goa a vital 2-1 victory over Kolkata giants East Bengal Club in the 35th Federation Cup at the MDSC Stadium, Manjeri in Kerala on Saturday afternoon. Sporting Goa led 1-0 at the interval.
After rising off the bench to score in the last match, Sporting Goa striker Victorino Fernandes was handed a start and it did not take him long to repay Coach Oscar Bruzon as he managed to head in a pass from Rowlinn Borges in the 18th minute to give the Flaming Oranje the lead.
Changing over, East Bengal were a revitalized team and finally found the equalizer when Ryuji Seuoka converted a penalty after the Sporting Goa custodian Ravi Kumar was adjudged to have brought down Harmanjot Singh Khabra. Five minutes from the end, Sporting Clube de Goa’s Beevan D’Mello crept into the box to score after receiving the ball from substitute Stephen Barretto’s cross.
Sporting Clube de Goa has now collected three points from two matches, while defending champions East Bengal Club stays on one point after the same number of games with the group wide open and all four clubs with the chance to progress into the semifinals.
