5 biggest upsets in cup competitions this season

Bristol City v Manchester United - Carabao Cup Quarter-Final

The smaller sides have made a habit of knocking out the big sides in cup competitions

Trophies are what any club or player aspires to win, and with Europe's elite clubs battling it out for the top prizes on offer, the less prestigious trophies become appealing to smaller club having smaller resources.

The bigger clubs tend to look at cup games as an opportunity to rotate and rest key players giving squad players some game time. This may be the primary reason why we find many upsets in domestic league competitions every year.

Everyone loves an underdog . Smaller teams seem to have an extra bit of belief when they come up against the big clubs. No one expects them to win and that's exactly where their confidence lies. Giant killing in itself acts as a virtual trophy and something that will live on as a memory for years to come.

Here are five of the biggest cup upsets this season.

The very first round of this year's DFB Pokal sprung a surprise as Augsburg succumbed to a shocking defeat to a club you have probably never heard of before. Magdeburg ply their trade in the third division of the German league and were the unlikely winners of the tie.

The game was an end to end affair with both teams trying hard to score the opening goal. Both keepers were on their toes and had to make crucial saves throughout the game. The first half ended goalless with neither team able to break the deadlock.

The second half resumed in similar fashion and both teams were neck to neck for the majority of it. Eventually, it was the home side who went in front, as striker Christian Beck scored from close range in the 87th minute to send the crowd into a frenzy.

Their victory was confirmed in the 91st minute as Tobias Schwede also found the back of the net. Augsburg had won a corner and their keeper was committed forward. The corner was cleared and a shot was fired into the open net. The ball hit the post and was bobbling inside the box as the winger came running to hit it past the sliding defenders. It was a night that the Magdeburg fans will never forget.
